  1. I’m also a line of sight enthusiast (though my camera software isn’t up to par for capturing these!) and would like to submit some USA line of sight possibilities (there are lots more besides these ones!):

Mount Whitney – San Gorgonio Mountain, CA – 190mi/306km – I have actually seen this view with my eyes. http://www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/gallery/usa/whitney.html

Mount Rainier, WA – Twin Peaks, OR (Wallowa Mountains) – 237mi/382km http://www.udeuschle.selfhost.pro/panoramas/panqueryfull.aspx?mode=newstandard&data=lon%3A-121.76049%24%24%24lat%3A46.85259%24%24%24alt%3Aauto%24%24%24altcam%3A10%24%24%24hialt%3Atrue%24%24%24resolution%3A200%24%24%24azimut%3A180%24%24%24sweep%3A360%24%24%24leftbound%3A111.15%24%24%24rightbound%3A120.5%24%24%24split%3A60%24%24%24splitnr%3A6%24%24%24tilt%3A-1.8991666666666664%24%24%24tiltsplit%3Afalse%24%24%24elexagg%3A1.2%24%24%24range%3A500%24%24%24colorcoding%3Atrue%24%24%24colorcodinglimit%3A302%24%24%24title%3ARainier%20%5BTelescope%5D%24%24%24description%3A%24%24%24email%3A%24%24%24language%3Aen%24%24%24screenwidth%3A1920%24%24%24screenheight%3A962

Black Dome, NY – Camel’s Hump, VT (low elevation view, both peaks only approx. 4,000ft high) – 155mi/249km

Hilgard Peak, UT – Mount Sneffels, CO – 209mi/336km – possibly the longest view of the Rocky Mountains. (ignore Shasta title)

I didn’t have the time to generate udeuschle panoramas of the following, but have verified these lines of sight with the website:

Mount Shasta, CA – North Sister, OR – 192mi/308km

Cloud Peak, WY – Greathouse Peak, MT – 196mi/315km

I believe these are among the longest lines of sight in the lower 48 states.

Feel free to email me with more questions or requests for additional lines of sight!

    • Hey man, excellent work. You might want to add this “The Grandest View” in Mesa Verde National Park in sw Colorado overlooking the nw corner of New Mexico and the northeast corner of Arizona. 162 miles as posted by the BLM.

  7. Dan – interesting set of points and udeuschle panoramas is an interesting resource. But it appears that the site does not take into consideration the curvature of the earth (if there is such a thing, lol) and the true elevation above sea level that starts to bisect that line of site (halfway across the span).

I went here to test the NY Black Dome line to Camel’s Hump in Vermont across 155mi and this is what it came out with, even without considering the mid-point elevation that would obviously obstruct thew view:
    https://dizzib.github.io/earth/curve-calc/?d0=155&h0=4003&unit=imperial

If udeuschle panoramas is faulty, maybe someone should notify them.

  12. And we are led to believe we live on a spinning ball 25000 miles in circumference. I’ve just heard a quote from a guy climbing everest who says you can see up to 1200 miles! Which is it…? Obviously anyone with half a brain can figure the earth is a level plane of sorts and not a silly ball!

Fact is we don’t have a true model!!

  15. I found a new line of sight from White Horse Hill, Oxfordshire to Waun Fach in the Black Mountains. I estimate that the distance is approximately 75 miles. The weather conditions, refraction, humidity and ambient light were all near perfect. My research includes the verified information from PeakFinder and Viewfinder Panoramas. I have also captured the view via my phone camera, although the quality isn’t great for supporting my claim. Andrew 31.5.19

  16. Just a really stupid question; if you have the longest possible view from Pik Dankova to Hindu Tagh, why doesn’t Hindu Tagh share the first place with Pik Dankova? If it’s possible to see from point A to point B, it should be possible to see from point B to point A, savvy?
